Midwifery

Professional Profile

Giving birth is a very special event in the life of a woman. It has always been the task of midwives to care for childbearing women and their newborn baby during this unique moment. The professional profile of the midwife has changed over the years, but the basic tasks remain the same.

The midwife is the expert for motherhood, she accompanies and cares for childbearing women as they become mothers. She looks after the woman during pregnancy, throughout labour and delivery and in the postnatal period. The midwifery profession is extremely varied and correspondingly demanding.

Antenatal care, counselling and birth preparation classes are as much a part of the job as caring for women during normal labour and subsequently looking after the mother and her baby. A midwife works independently, she must be capable of assessing and recognising risks without delay and when necessary she will consult appropriate experts. It is important that she remains calm in hectic situations and can make informed decisions.

The first bachelors's degree programme for midwives begins on 15th September 2008 at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences.
